Human Capital Consultants – Helping Start-Ups Get On Their Feet
by Jenny DeHuff on November 24, 2009
Mike Astringer and his team of consultants are here to help small businesses get on their feet. For many start-ups, challenges early-on include tasks of hiring, organizing and developing a market base. Herein lies a solution to many of these initial road blocks facing many small businesses across the U.S.Astringer founded Human Capital Consultants in 2005, with 16 years of experience serving clients within the realm of the Internet, computer software, consulting, telecommunications, marketing, casino gaming, health care and more.
“Start-ups need to hire,” said Astringer.
“There’s no going around the fact that they need to hire employees. In a lot of cases, entrepreneurs have no expertise in hiring and recruiting, and that can be a huge pitfall for a company. I researched the market, and found that outsourcing was a good niche.”
Human Capital Consultants oversees a slew of young start-ups, by helping them achieve customizable and matrix-driven solutions for its clients.
With a 12-year background in recruiting and human resources, Astringer already had ownership of a staff consultations firm when he started Human Capital Consultants.
Between 2005 and 2008, Human Capital Consultants grew tremendously, with 50 percent growth year-per-year.
“I thought that was a really good fit, we specifically target start-up and near-start-up companies,” he said. “I think the real genius aspect is the work we do for our clients in helping them grow – until they will grow large enough to have an internal recruiting department. That is a successful end to an engagement – when they’ve grown large enough to justify that.”
According to Astringer, about 80 percent of his company’s clientele is in Boston. Locally, American Infrastructure, a construction company, benefits from Astringer’s services. In Delaware, Pepco Holdings, an electric service provider, also launched with the help of Human Capital Consultants.
Astringer, who said he started Human Capital Consultants with only one customer, began by working out of his home office.
“I did not go out looking for money,” he said, calling his venture a “bootstrap idea.”
“It takes a unique brand of someone to understand a start-up environment and see the growth potential in going to work for them. That’s when they call me,” he said.
“A start-up really needs to figure out early on how they’re going to differentiate themselves from the competition.”
